In 2026, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden reaches a remarkable milestone: 160 years since its foundation. As part of a year-long anniversary program, the Zoo is preparing a special weekend packed with activities, entertainment and opportunities to discover the institution’s fascinating history. 

Throughout August 8 and 9, the Zoo will come alive with family-friendly programs celebrating not only its animals and plants, but also its 160-year heritage, conservation work and behind-the-scenes activities. Programs will run from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on both days at several locations across the Zoo, including the Main Gate Square, the Palm House, the Great Rock, the area opposite the Wildlife Rescue Centre and the Coral Reef Playground. 

The anniversary celebrations have been taking place throughout the year. Earlier in 2026, the outdoor exhibition “160 Years - Told Through Posters” presented historic posters from the Zoo’s archives, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into its past. The anniversary weekend offers a diverse range of activities, ensuring that both children and adults will find something enjoyable to do. 

Highlights include: 

• - Adventure games and interactive educational stations located throughout the Zoo
• - Wildlife conservation presentations offering insights into the everyday work of rescuing and caring for wild animals
• - Historical experiences and themed activities bringing the Zoo’s 160-year story to life
• - Arts and crafts workshops and playful quizzes for the whole family
• - Children’s activities and live performances designed especially for younger visitors

Guests will also have the chance to take a closer look at the professional work that goes on behind the scenes, including animal care, horticulture and wildlife rescue. These activities offer a unique insight into the people and expertise that keep the Zoo running every day.

The highlight of the anniversary weekend will come on the evening of Sunday, August 9, when Budapest Bár takes the stage for a special birthday concert in the foyer of the Biodome. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Biodome’s main entrance, with the concert scheduled to run from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. 

With its combination of animals, family activities, history, conservation and live music, the 160th anniversary weekend promises to be one of the highlights of Budapest’s summer in 2026.
