Szigliget is located on a peninsula on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, between Badacsony and Keszthely, on several volcanic hills. The Kétöles stream, which runs from Nyirád to here, flows into the lake within its borders.
The settlement existed in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Celtic, Roman, and Avar archaeological finds were discovered in the vicinity. The ruins of a parochial church, built in the 12th century, can be seen. Until 1822, the area was an island in Lake Balaton. In 1822, the bank dams around Balaton were rearranged to connect the island to the mainland.
After the Battle of Mohács, the owners of the settlement and the Szigliget castle were members of the prestigious noble family of Lengyeltót. The most famous castle captain of the Castle was Bálint Magyar, after whose death in 1573; the next castle captain of Szigliget was his brother-in-law, István Lengyeltót (fl. 1567–1581). The settlement belonged to Zala County from the time of King St. Stephen of Hungary until the 1950 county reorganization.
One of Hungary's most visited and deservedly popular castles, Szigliget Castle, on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, has a history of 750 years. It is washed by the shore of Lake Balaton to the south and bordered by the peaty fields and mountains of Tapolca to the north. Wherever we approach Szigliget, the old Castle is visible from everywhere. Szigliget Castle is one of the few castles in Hungary that never bore the Ottoman insignia on its towers during the Turkish period. Its brave soldiers preserved its independence for 150 years. Only hatred of the Habsburgs destroyed it, blowing up its walls.
The Castle was renovated a few years ago and awaits you and your family with even more attractions.
