August 20th is both Hungary's national holiday and a day of state celebration, marking the anniversary of the canonization of King Stephen I, who is honored on Saint Stephen's Feast. In Debrecen, this day also coincides with the Flower Carnival. Since 1966, the residents of the city and visiting tourists have been treated to a stunning spectacle on this occasion, making it a much-anticipated event each year.
The first Flower Parade was established 120 years ago by the Debrecen Women’s Union, symbolizing unity for a noble cause.
This year, the Debrecen Flower Carnival will emphasize community engagement and celebrate the vibrant presence of various art forms.
In addition to the magnificent flower floats, dance groups, local organizations, and creative communities will take center stage in the festivities.
Dance groups representing German, Turkish, Italian, Spanish, French, Chinese, Brazilian, and Greek cultures will enhance the carnival parade with their performances.
A community flower float is being created with the involvement of the city's residents, and floral installations will be displayed at multiple locations around the city.
The Galiba parade is making a return, featuring participation from kindergartens, schools, local organizations, and businesses.
Families can look forward to the Galiba Children's Festival at a new venue—the courtyard of the Old Town Hall. The spectacular night parade will also delight spectators once again in 2025.
The success of the carnival relies on the efforts of nearly 4,000 people, transforming the entire city into a festive atmosphere. Floral decorations embellish public squares, tram stops, and parks. Evening programs enhance the daytime parade, allowing you to experience the magic even at sunset or after dark.
