History
The Hungarian Museum of Natural Sciences has a rich history that began in the early 19th century, when Count Ferenc Széchenyi generously donated his collection from Nagycenk to the National Museum in 1802. Thanks to the vision of Julianna Festetics, who contributed a remarkable collection of mineral resources, the natural science department was born. During the years of the freedom struggle, the museum's exhibits flourished, reaching an impressive total of nearly 50,000.
A century after its establishment, the museum confronted the challenges of limited space, as the zoological collection had grown to millions of specimens. Despite a lengthy period of dispersion, the natural science department found its new home in 1996, following a pivotal government decision to create the Natural Science Museum in the prestigious building complex of the Ludovika Academy.
