Throughout June, the jewel of the Balaton Highlands is transformed into a sea of purple, welcoming visitors to celebrate nature, culture, and local traditions. Historic cobbled streets, panoramic views of Lake Balaton, and endless fragrant lavender fields combine to create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Hungary.

The 2026 festival holds special significance as Tihany celebrates 100 years of lavender cultivation. The story began in the 1920s, when pioneering horticulturist Gyula Bittera introduced lavender plants from France and established Hungary’s first major lavender plantation on the Tihany Peninsula.

Today, Tihany lavender is internationally renowned for the exceptional quality and richness of its essential oil - often considered superior to that of its French counterparts. Although the original plantation eventually disappeared, a new seven-hectare lavender field was later established opposite the Outer Lake, creating one of the region’s most breathtaking summer landscapes.

Guests can wander through picturesque surroundings while discovering the work of local artists, craftspeople, and community groups. The festival offers an authentic glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage, complemented by the calming scent and beauty of Tihany’s iconic lavender.

The celebrations feature a diverse program of cultural events, live music, artisan markets, family-friendly activities, and evening entertainment.

One of the most anticipated attractions is the Lavender100 Celebration, commemorating a century of Tihany lavender. After sunset, the staircase of the historic Abbey is illuminated with spectacular decorative lighting, while the nearby Pentecost Grove is transformed into a mesmerizing world of music, lights, and interactive installations.

On the Day of Local Communities, held on 27 June, visitors can meet local foundations, artisans, farmers, and producers at Borsos Miklós Square. Browse handcrafted lavender products, discover exceptional natural cosmetics, sample homemade delicacies, and experience the creativity and hospitality that make Tihany so special.

Whether you are seeking relaxation, cultural experiences, breathtaking scenery, or a romantic getaway by Lake Balaton, the Tihany Lavender Festival 2026 promises an unforgettable celebration of nature, tradition, and the timeless beauty of lavender.
