Explore the stunning Sümeg Castle

Sümeg Castle is one of the most stunning medieval fortresses in the country. Despite the ups and downs of history, it still provides an impressive view, dominating its surroundings from its elevated hilltop.

The castle is composed of three main sections: the outer area, the inner courtyard, and the citadel. The oldest part of the castle is the lower level of the Old Tower within the citadel, which was constructed in the 1260s. It is believed that a wooden upper section may have been built on top of it. In the 14th century, during the reign of the Anjou kings, the castle underwent significant structural enhancements. The walls of the citadel and the upper level of the Old Tower were constructed, and existing buildings were repaired.

The oldest part of the citadel, located in the lower level of the old tower, was constructed in the second half of the 13th century. A century later, the upper level of the tower and the citadel walls were completed. A significant expansion occurred during the 15th century, when a strong, high defensive wall surrounded the plateau in front of the small castle. During this time, additional structures were built, including the inner gate tower, palace, chapel, outer gate tower, and parts of the castle wall, which featured loopholes and partisans. After Veszprém was occupied by the Turks, the bishopric relocated to Sümeg Castle and initiated extensive reconstruction efforts. A two-story bastion was constructed at the northern corner of the castle, named after Bishop Köves. The Turks were unable to capture Sümeg Castle; however, it began to decline after the Rákóczi War of Independence, suffering significant damage when it was burned and destroyed in 1713.

In 1989, the city of Sümeg transferred ownership of the castle to a private entity, subject to strict monument protection requirements. Since then, maintenance work has been ongoing. Currently, the castle is being renovated as part of the National Castle Program.

Today, the craft workshops, medieval kitchen, wine cellar, weapons and the torture chamber opening from the inner castle courtyard create a real medieval atmosphere. Visitors can see the bishop's bedroom, reception and council hall, castle chapel, or the exhibition hall presenting the history of the castle. There is a fantastic view from the castle walls, with a good view of the entire fortress and the city of Sümeg.

The Historical Experience Park located at the bottom of the castle presents the life of medieval castles, the course of contemporary battles and weapons. At the war machine exhibition, visitors can learn about the tools with which castles before the 15th century were besieged.

The historical playground ensures children's fun. The carriage museum is the unique collection of the castle captain, where those interested can see the carriages and carts of higher social ranks and commoners, and at the entrance you can get to know the knights and their weapons more closely.

Large-scale renovation work was completed at the castle in 2022, and a new interactive exhibition opened in the spring of 2023. Check out the exhibitions and programs, and prepare to travel back in time! An asphalt parking lot is available for visitors at the beginning of the road leading to Sümeg Castle. The castle is easily accessible; you can reach it by taking a moderately steep staircase.
