One of the most enchanting green spaces in Svábhegy is the Jókai Garden, where the sounds of birds, shady trees, and historical monuments create a welcoming atmosphere. This nature reserve was once the summer residence of the writer Mór Jókai and also served as the site of a botanical experiment.
Jókai himself designed the terraced garden, which is filled with roses, trees, and vines. He enjoyed working outdoors, and the garden provided constant inspiration for his literary works, of which he was justifiably proud. In addition to the carefully renovated walking paths and the replanted vegetation, the garden's ambiance evokes the charm of the 19th century, offering visitors a unique experience.
The classicist Steindl Villa, located in the garden, has undergone a complete reconstruction and now serves as an interactive exhibition space called Birdland. In addition, the historical garden, which is protected for its natural and architectural significance, houses the headquarters of the Duna-Ipoly National Park Directorate and the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Association, as well as the Jókai Memorial Room of the Petőfi Literary Museum. Next to the Steindl Villa, there is a visitor center. With its nature-friendly walking paths, rich historical background, and refreshing air, the Jókai Garden is an excellent destination for families, nature lovers, and literature enthusiasts alike.
The park's newly renovated garden paths, revitalized plant life, additional parking lots, and new bicycle racks, along with an updated entrance, all contribute to the Jókai Garden's ability to welcome visitors interested in nature and culture with dignity. The grape pergola and the Jókai memorials further enhance the historical essence of the location.
Jókai Garden is open to the public during regular hours, and groups can request a guided tour with prior arrangement.
