The city, often referred to as the capital of the Danube Bend, is undoubtedly a historical and cultural treasure of the region. Its architecture and museums, which celebrate the birthplace and coronation of Saint Stephen, showcase centuries of history. With numerous attractions and activities available, it is definitely worth spending an entire weekend exploring this charming town.

One of the most significant cities in Hungary is Esztergom, which has been inhabited since prehistoric times and during the Roman period. It served a crucial border defense role under the name Solva. After the conquest, Esztergom became one of the centers of the Hungarian state from the 10th century onward.

Notably, Saint Stephen was born and crowned king here in the year 1000, and the Archbishopric of Esztergom was established, which became the highest institution of the Hungarian Catholic Church. During the Middle Ages, the city was both a royal seat and a religious center. However, following the Turkish occupation in 1543, Esztergom experienced a long decline. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was rebuilt, and its most important symbol became the Esztergom Basilica, the largest church in Hungary, which is truly beautiful.

The second-tallest building in Hungary, in terms of its external dimensions, is also the largest church structure in the country, reaching a height of 100 meters from the crypt to the dome. Interestingly, it ranks as the third largest basilica in Europe and is the largest in the world based on its dimensions. If you ever visit, be sure to admire the main altarpiece, "The Assumption of Mary," created by Michelangelo Grigoletti.

The city boasts several wonderful sights, including Esztergom Castle, St. Anna Parish, the Esztergom Mosque, Mária Valéria Bridge, and Strázsa Hill. The city center is also worth exploring, as it is rich in historical significance and features excellent restaurants and cafés along the Danube and Kis-Duna promenades. If you're seeking relaxation, be sure to visit the Szent István beach bath.

Esztergom is filled with historical attractions, making it an excellent day trip from Budapest. Visitors who stay longer will find it even more rewarding.
