The museum was founded by Count Ferenc Széchényi in 1802, initially as the National Széchényi Library. Over time, donations transformed it into a major museum of history and culture. The building also played an important role in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. On March 15, poet Sándor Petőfi famously recited his Nemzeti dal (National Song) and presented the revolutionary 12 Points on the museum’s steps. Today, statues of Petőfi and fellow poet János Arany can be found in the museum garden. 

Built between 1837 and 1847, the museum is one of Budapest’s finest examples of Neoclassical architecture. Its grand façade features Corinthian columns and an impressive decorated pediment. Inside, the magnificent main staircase is adorned with paintings by Károly Lotz and Mór Than. The museum garden has also hosted concerts and cultural events and is now the setting for the annual Museum Festival.
