The best-known Hungarian wine region is about so much more than just wine! The Zemplén Mountains are rich in cultural and architectural sights but offer countless opportunities for hikers. So, plenty is to keep you busy for a long weekend or even a whole week.

The region is home to noble wine, Tokaji Aszú, which has been described as the "King of Wines and Wine of Kings" by Louis XIV. This classic sweet wine is notable for its marriage of sweetness, acidity, and apricot fruit flavors. The history of wine production in Tokaj goes back as early as the 12th century, and it is one of the first wine regions with a vineyard classification system established here in 1730.

In 2002, the Tokaj wine region was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. This recognition honors the exceptional quality of Tokaj wines and the region’s cultural and historical significance. The landscape of Tokaj, with its rolling hills, vineyards, and centuries-old cellars, remains unchanged, preserving the essence of its storied past. The region has historic castles of the Zemplén: Füzér, Regéc, Boldogkő, Sárospatak, and Szerencs.

The Tokaj wine region is blessed with a unique combination of geographical and climatic conditions that contribute to the distinct character of its wines. The area is defined by its volcanic soil, which imparts minerality and complexity to the grapes. The confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers creates a microclimate ideal for the development of noble rot, a crucial element in producing Tokaji Aszú.

Visiting the Tokaj wine region offers an immersive experience of Hungarian winemaking. Many vineyards and cellars offer tours and tastings, providing insights into traditional winemaking techniques and the chance to sample a range of wines. Over the last 100 years, six varieties have been grown in the Tokaj wine region: Furmint, Hárslevelű, Sárgamuskotály, Zéta, Kabar and  Kövérszőlő. The first three are considered principal varieties. Each variety has to satisfy different expectations.

The Tokaj region hosts several wine festivals throughout the year, where visitors can enjoy local wines, food, and cultural performances. These festivals provide an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and meet the people behind the wines.
