The theme for this anniversary is “Healing Heritage,” and the year begins with a national children's drawing competition. Children are invited to illustrate what healing and recovery mean to them and to depict their relationship with their pediatrician.

Prof. Dr. Pál Heim (1875–1929) was a pioneer in modern Hungarian pediatrics and established training for women in children's health and childcare in Hungary. His life was dedicated to healing children and improving child care, and his contributions continue to serve as an example for the health community today.

After studying abroad, Heim became acquainted with modern medical approaches and applied his knowledge to Hungarian healthcare upon his return. His legacy endures, as he played a crucial role in the development of infant and child care. His research focused on issues such as infant feeding disorders, metabolic problems, and the significance of breast milk. He is credited with initiating pediatric nursing training and supporting the establishment of a network of child health nurses.

After his studies in Switzerland and Germany, Heim quickly rose to prominence as a leading authority in Hungarian pediatrics. Among his scientific contributions, he notably recognized the importance of water and salt balance in infants' metabolic disorders. He was instrumental in forming the National Stefánia Association, which laid the groundwork for the Hungarian public health service.

As the head of the pediatric clinic at the Elisabeth University of Bratislava, his teaching and research activities gained widespread recognition. His time in Pécs was exceptionally productive, resulting in numerous important publications.

In his popular writings, he emphasized practical issues in child-rearing and the training of healthcare personnel. In 1929, after the retirement of his former mentor, Heim took over the management of the Budapest Pediatric Clinic. Tragically, he passed away at the young age of 54 shortly after.

The children's hospital and clinic on Üllői út in Budapest has been named after Pál Heim since 1957, and the Hungarian Society of Pediatricians honors his memory with a commemorative medal. His son, Ernő Heim, became a renowned architect, winning the Miklós Ybl Prize, while his great-grandson established the Pál Heim Foundation to advance people-centered pediatric healthcare in Hungary.

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Prof. Dr. Pál Heim’s birth, Magyar Posta is issuing a commemorative stamp. Forty thousand copies will be produced, available through philately specialist services and select post offices starting November 28, 2025.
