The Church commonly known as Matthias Church, is one of our largest churches and has a long historical significance. It is the second most famous church in the capital, following the Basilica of St. Stephen.
According to tradition, it was built in 1015, shortly after the adoption of Christianity; however, the official foundation was laid in the 1200s. The church was rebuilt in the Gothic style during the 14th century and underwent another renovation in the 19th century, based on the designs of Frigyes Schulek.
Between 2006 and 2013, extensive external reconstruction work was completed, restoring the church to its former splendor. Matthias Church is a prime example of Central European Gothic architecture, featuring an ornate facade with rich patterns, sculptures, and reliefs. Inside, visitors can admire the wooden elements, gold accents, and beautifully painted walls.
The Buda Castle Church of the Assumption has a rich tradition of church music that spans over 300 years. This historic venue regularly hosts concerts featuring various foreign church choirs and ensembles that specialize in sacred music.
For many years, these performances have aimed to reach and inspire visitors through their spiritual offerings. The performing groups primarily focus on classical music, showcasing a range of styles that include Gregorian chants, Baroque compositions, and contemporary works, such as spirituals.
Both professional and amateur choirs, orchestras, and chamber ensembles are organized by Hungarian and international organizations.
These performances not only provide an enjoyable concert experience but also allow attendees to feel the presence and love of God through sacred music.
Concerts are held every Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 PM.
Address: 1014 Budapest - Castle District, Trinity Square 2.
