Tihany is a village located in the Balaton Uplands, within Veszprém County, in the Balatonfüred District. It is renowned for its stunning natural landscape, situated on the Tihany Peninsula, which extends into Lake Balaton.

At the heart of the village stands the Tihany Benedictine Abbey, founded in 1055 by King Andrew I of Hungary, who is buried in the abbey's crypt. The abbey's founding document is the earliest surviving fragment of the Hungarian language, which is now preserved in the Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma. The church was reconstructed in the Baroque style in 1754. Today, the abbey remains operational and is a popular tourist attraction, notable for its historical and artistic significance. From the abbey, one can enjoy the best views of Lake Balaton.

The abbey serves as a notable reference in Habsburg history, as it was the site where Charles I, the last Habsburg emperor of Austria, was briefly imprisoned following his second attempt to reclaim the throne of Hungary. A famous landmark in the area is the Tihany echo, which exists between the Tihany Abbey and Visshang-domb. At a time when buildings did not obstruct the sound waves, this echo could be heard clearly. Today, it can still be experienced in clear, quiet weather, especially during winter. The word "echo" originates from Latin, derived from the Greek term "ekho," which also means echo. There have been poems inspired by this phenomenon, including works by Mihály Csokonai Vitéz and Mihály Vörösmarty, but the most renowned poem is by János Garay, which summarizes the legend associated with the place.

The most significant building complex in Tihany is the Tihany Abbey, situated on a hilltop. It was founded in 1055 by King Andrew I, whose tomb can be found in the Romanesque-style crypt. The abbey's founding charter is one of the oldest monuments in the Hungarian language. The Baroque-style church, which features two towers and was completed in 1752, has become a symbol of the settlement, ancient lavender fields, and the legendary Echo Hill. Additionally, visitors can explore a geyser field similar to Iceland's, medieval cave dwellings, and an exciting adventure park.

Tihany provides visitors with a wide range of experiences and attractions, enough to fill several weeks.
