A Treasure Trove of History

Welcome to the Fisherman's Bastion! This stunning site originally had a defensive role and got its name from the charming Fisherman's Town below it. Back in the day, the local fishermen, who traded in the area, also stepped up to defend the bastion when needed.

The renovation journey began in 1899, thanks to the talented architect Frigyes Schulek, and after lots of hard work, it was finally opened to the public on October 9, 1905. The renovation took a bit longer than planned because a treasure trove of archaeological finds emerged during the process, including beautiful Gothic and Renaissance tombstones and even the remains of a former Dominican church!

Frigyes Schulek had a clear vision for the bastion. He created a lovely staircase made up of three sections, along with the northern and southern bastions, charming corridors, and a cozy courtyard. The northern tower, called the former Híradás bastion, has its own unique history, while Schulek personally designed the southern tower. In the courtyard, you'll find an impressive equestrian statue of Szent István, the first king of Hungary, crafted by the artist Alajos Strobl. The base of the statue is beautifully decorated with reliefs that celebrate significant moments from his reign, including his crowning. 

Did you know that this building is one of the most popular tourist spots in Budapest? It's also a favorite filming location! You might recognize it from music videos by famous singers like Ellie Goulding and Selena Gomez. Just a quick stroll away is the lovely Mátyás Church, which has a fascinating history as a coronation site. And if you're up for a little adventure, you can climb just 197 steps to reach the charming lower crown balcony of the church tower!
