Hungary truly has a thousand surprises in store! In Egerszalók, located in Heves county, you can witness a natural phenomenon that is one of only three in the world.
The Medicinal Waters Valley is renowned for its salt hill, which was formed by medicinal water erupting from the depths below, and this process continues to shape the hill today. Such an unusual natural formation can only be found in two other locations: Pamukkale in Turkey and Yellowstone National Park in the USA. Therefore, if you have already visited the area, it would be a missed opportunity to overlook this remarkable site.
Visitors can admire the 1,200-square-meter salt mound, where thermal water erupts at temperatures of 65-68°C from a depth of 410 meters. The path leading from the Nosztalgia spa parking lot provides access to this stunning view. For those who enjoy bathing, the Saliris Resort Spa and Wellness Bath offers pools with direct views of the salt hill. The bath water contains thirty trace elements, with the most significant being calcium, sodium, magnesium, and sulfur. While the presence of sulfur gives the area a strong smell, don't let that deter you; the breathtaking views and healing properties of the water are sure to make your experience worthwhile!
The hill was formed as a result of drilling activities in the area in 1961. Initially searching for natural gas and oil, the drillers instead discovered a hot water source that now attracts thousands of visitors, particularly those suffering from joint and rheumatic diseases, as well as bath enthusiasts. In 2016, Egerszalók received the health resort qualification.
The Valley of Medicinal Springs offers many attractions beyond its famous thermal waters. You can explore the region and visit the cave dwellings carved into rhyolite tufa rock, where you can learn about Hungarian folk traditions. The pond created by damming the Laskó stream is a great spot for fishing and hiking. Additionally, be sure to taste some of the area's renowned wines, such as the Italian Riesling from Egerszalók or the Bikavér from Eger.
If you're interested in sightseeing, Eger, located just 5 kilometers from Egerszalók, is worth a visit. The downtown area is culturally and architecturally significant, making it a delightful place for a leisurely walk.
